Food and Nutritional Program

Feed 270 Kids

We feed learners and vulnerable children without enough food at home.

  • Provide 2,820 meals per week

We have a kitchen building with a storeroom that was built through funding from Africa Inland Mission – Southern Africa.

The kitchen includes a hygienic and food safe space; food preparation area; food cleaning area; food distribution area; utility area; and the requisite ventilation.

We need:

  • Crockery, gas cylinders, kitchen utensils.

  • We always need food so any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Our Own Garden

FHS grows a garden that is protected by poles and netting. We have garden equipment, seedlings, soil and organic material for the plants.

The garden produces 25- 40kg of vegetables per month.

We use water tanks to capture water, and we built a stand for the foundation slab on which the tanks sit.  All materials and the tanks were purchased through sponsors.

We need:

  • Supplement of fresh vegetables.

  • Variety of fruits.

Counseling

Provide Counseling for 100

We share a social worker with Huis Maerua Children’s Home.

  • 55 children participate in counselling, play therapy and use the play ground facilities as part of our therapy programme.

  • We provide a dedicated counseling room that houses all of the required play art materials.

  • Children participate in art therapy and practice creative coping strategies in the therapy room and on our play ground area. The therapy room is equipped with books, toys; computer and other play tools to give to the children and the youth a comfortable space to communicate and improve own their creativity.

  • 45 adult guardians receive counseling to help them understand the effects of trauma on the children they care for, and to teach them how to cope and respond.

  • If we learn a child is at risk, we refer the child to the Hakahana Clinic via the Ministry of Health and Social Services Health Extension worker.

We need:

  • Income to hire another counselor so we can help more children.

  • Educational and fun toys for our toy lending library.  This is for play therapy.

Education Programs

Bridge the Education Gap

Our concept is innovative.  We use  a diverse range of educational and trauma treatment tools to reintegrate young people into school and every day life.  This includes children and early teens who have dropped out of school or who have never been to school and are too old to start in the lower grades in the government system.

The reasons they are not in school include that guardians keep them home to work, or they have difficulty concentrating due to illness, malnutrition, or trauma.

Our program offers accelerated learning using the government school curriculum.   The aim is for every child to be able to attend a state school again after 3 years.

  • 30 children and youth are enrolled in our bridging program, which we call the Remedial program.

  • They receive one nutritious meal a day at the Centre.

  • We provide all school supplies, hygiene packages, and school books.

We need:

  • We have a waiting list for children and youth needing help.  We need sponsors for individual children. Go to our The Children We Help for information.  Please sign up to our Facebook page to see individual profiles as we post them.

  • Hygiene packages for children to stay clean.

  • Educational books (curriculum) and stationary supplies.

  • Christmas gift boxes for girls and boys from ages six to fourteen.

  • Upgraded alarm system to keep the Centre safe at all times.

Tutoring Children in Need

The orphans or vulnerable children we support come from poverty.  Their guardians don’t have the funds to buy school books, supplies, and school uniforms.  Because of their living conditions these children struggle to sleep (many live beside shebeens – local bars), don’t have the nutrition needed to concentrate, and can’t take care of their personal hygiene.  We offer an after school program for these childre.

  • 40 children are tutored every afternoon during the school week in various subjects including English, Math, and Sciences.

  • We provide assistance to children with their homework — much like they would receive at home if they came from more settled and stable environments.

  • These children are fed a nutritious meal.

  • We provide their school supplies and books.

  • They are given a hygiene package to take care of themselves and can clean up at our Centre, too.

We need:

  • We have a waiting list for children and youth who need to be sponsored to go to school.   Go to our The Children We Help for information.  Please sign up to our Facebook page to see individual profiles as we post them.  You can sponsor a child directly.

  • Hygiene packages for children to stay clean.

  • Some schools in Katutura where our children live require that guardians pay a school contribution.

  • Educational books (curriculum) and stationary supplies.

  • Christmas gift boxes for girls and boys from ages six to fourteen.

Early Childhood Development

Pre Primary

Small children are introduced to a variety of motivating and educational material.  They develop relationships and learn how to respect others by observing and interacting with older children.  Trauma treatment is provided where necessary.  Children participate in creative play to build imagination and resilience.  We lend toys to their guardians as these children have no toys at home.  Our program is similar to pre-primary programs all over the world except it helps children who don’t have the basics.

  • 20 children in our pre primary care program.

  • They receive one nutritious meal a day at the Centre.

  • We provide all school supplies, and hygiene packages.

We need:

  • We have a waiting list for small children needing help.  We need sponsors for individual children. Go to our Sponsor a Child page for information.  Please sign up to our Facebook page to see individual profiles as we post them.

  • Hygiene packages for children to stay clean.  We provide three hygiene packages per year.

  • Pre-primary educational books and stationary supplies for small children.

  • Christmas gift boxes for girls and boys from ages five to seven.

  • Upgraded alarm system to keep the Centre safe at all times.

Early Childhood Development

Toddlers living in poverty can end up being taken care of by children not much older than themselves when guardians are out looking for work or at jobs that pay less than needed to afford basic needs.  These children lack nutrition and discipline.  We provide a safe environment where toddlers are cared for and introduced to play and other children.  We do some age-appropriate educating as well.   They receive a nutritious meal and hygiene care.

  • 20 toddlers are cared for at the Centre daily.

  • They receive one nutritious meal per day and we take care of their hygiene needs.

  • We provide all toys for these children to play with and we host games and activities.

We need:

  • We have a waiting list for toddlers who live in poverty.   Go to our The Children We Help for information.  We post toddlers on our Facebook page when they need support.  Please sign up to our Facebook page to see individual profiles as we post them.  You can sponsor a child directly.

  • Hygiene products for toddlers to be kept clean, including diapers.

  • Toys of all types.

  • Christmas gift boxes for girls and boys from ages two to four.
